Buying Guide for Whole House Solar Generators
Battery Capacity and Scalability
Capacity measured in watt-hours (Wh) indicates how long the generator can power your devices. For whole house use, look for systems starting at 3000Wh and expandable beyond 20kWh to ensure coverage during long outages.
AC Output and Voltage
Verify the continuous AC output watts and voltage compatibility. Most homes in the U.S. use 120V or dual 120/240V; generators supporting 240V and higher watt output (over 4000W) are necessary to run heavy appliances like HVAC units.
Solar Charging and Recharging Options
Efficient solar charging capability prolongs off-grid operation. Look for models with high solar input capacity and fast recharge times. Multiple charging options like AC wall outlets, EV chargers, or gas generators add flexibility.
Portability and Installation
Consider physical size, weight, and whether the unit is portable or installed permanently. Portable designs offer versatility for outdoor use, while installed systems may better integrate for whole house backup.
Output Ports and Connectivity
Ensure the generator has enough AC outlets, USB ports, and DC outputs to power all essential devices simultaneously. Smart app connectivity can enhance user control and monitoring.
Expandability and Multiple Unit Support
Some systems allow connecting multiple batteries or inverters to increase power and capacity. This feature is beneficial for future-proofing your setup or powering larger homes.
Warranty and Support
A solid warranty and responsive customer service can be vital. Look for products with comprehensive warranty coverage and positive brand reputation for reliability.
