Buying Guide For 18 kW Portable Generators
Power Output and Running Watts
Look for generators with sufficient running watts to support your critical home appliances during outages. An 18 kW class generator typically provides 14,000 to 20,000 running watts, ideal for whole-house backup or running essential circuits.
Fuel Type and Flexibility
Fuel options affect run time and convenience. Gasoline is common but requires safe storage. Dual or tri-fuel models can use propane and natural gas, offering cleaner emissions and longer fuel shelf life. Consider fuel availability during emergencies.
Start Mechanism
Remote electric start systems with key fobs add convenience, allowing you to start and monitor the generator from a distance. Backup recoil start is useful during battery failure.
Safety Features
Carbon monoxide (CO) sensors and automatic shutdowns are crucial for safe operation indoors or near living spaces. Automatic low oil shutdown protects engine longevity.
Outlets and Transfer Switch Compatibility
Ensure the generator has the appropriate outlet types for your home and devices. Transfer switch ready generators simplify grid integration for automatic home power during outages.
Run Time and Fuel Capacity
Longer run times on a single tank reduce refueling frequency. Check fuel tank size and efficiency, especially if you plan extended use.
Durability and Warranty
Invest in generators with sturdy construction, weather resistance, and solid manufacturer warranties. Brands like Generac and Westinghouse have strong reputations for reliability.
